INRAE (French National Research Institute for Agricultural, Food and Environment) is a national public scientific research institution under the dual aegis of the Ministry of Research and the Ministry of Agriculture. INRAE is a Europe’s top agricultural research institute, ranked 5th worldwide in animal and plant sciences. INRAE carries out mission-oriented research for Sustainable agriculture, Livestock systems for the future, Sustainable and healthy food for all, Agricultural systems adapted to global changes. INRAE lends its expertise to public decision-making and to shaping national and international research strategies. There are 1825 researchers, 250 laboratories including 45 experimental units across.

Seven INRAE laboratories are involved in SMARTER providing complementary expertise in 1) animal genetic and genomic through GenPhySE,lab, 2) animal breeding systems and social analysis via AGIR lab, 3) Animal modelling in MoSAR lab,  4) Animal health phenotyping in IHAP lab, 5) Animal behaviour and welfare phenotyping in UMRH lab, 6) Feed efficiency phenotyping in Selmet lab, 7) Animal reproduction phenotyping in PRC lab.
