Visit of the Greek Minister of Agriculture to the experimental site of SMARTER!

The Minister of the Greek Ministry of Agriculture visited the experimental site of SMARTER Task 2.3 “Combining research with tradition gives great potential to animal husbandry in Greece” in Metsovo, Ioannina, (Greece) on 23rd June 2021. Members of AUTH team gave a detailed description of the work performed within SMARTER project with special emphasis on the use of GPS devices for studying the grazing behavior and patterns of Boutsko sheep. Details regarding genotyping of the animals towards the genetic characterization of the breed were also provided. The Minister stressed the great importance of research programs such as SMARTER for the genetic characterization and improvement of indigenous Greek breeds. Such actions could help to increase the viability of the primary sector, through high added value products from indigenous sheep and goat breeds.
